Can Vitamin Waters Improve Your Health?

Drinking soda pop isn’t the best for you (more on this the day after tomorrow). I don’t like coffee, though when I lived in Guatemala, I liked the coffee plantations’ aroma. Nor do I particularly like tea, though I drink tea now and then.

I like plain water. It might be because I’m cheap. Or it might stem from the fact that I don’t trust food companies to always act in my best health interest. I’m not paranoid enough to think they want to do me in (bad for future business), though.

So, I was pleased to find Jill Weisenberger’s article “Vitamin Waters: The Unhealthy Truth”. I specifically found out the truth about Special K2O Protein Water. I’ve bought these and similar products because the 5 grams of fiber and protein were appealing to me.

Here’s how Jill starts her article:

Today’s waters are touted as vitamin-enriched super-drinks. So what’s the truth? Can they improve your health? We separate the facts from phony pitches.

Burn calories! Have more energy! Boost memory! Water can change your life’ according to their manufacturers. It’s a claim that has gotten Coca-Cola, maker of Glaceau Vitaminwater, into hot, er, water. The company was sued for deceptive marketing practices about its popular line of fortified waters, though Coca-Cola has dismissed the claims as an “opportunistic PR stunt.”

And that’s just one type of water. Others are supposedly enhanced with fiber, protein, caffeine and mood-boosting herbs.
