Find Cures With Your Computer

How to Use Your Computer for Good

You can get involved with legitimate research projects that use your computer’s spare and unused computing power to solve complex computations that are used to find cures for diseases. I have done this for over 12 years. This blog post is about Protein Folding projects. The wording below is from the https://foldingathome.org website.

What is protein folding and how is folding linked to disease?
Proteins are biology’s workhorses — its “nanomachines.” Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or “fold.” The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.

While you keep going with your everyday activities, your computer will be working to help us find cures for diseases like Cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, Coronavirus and many others.

Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. “misfold”), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.

New COVID-19 small molecule screening simulations are running on full Folding@home!

Folding@home (FAH or F@h) is a distributed computing project for simulating protein dynamics, including the process of protein folding and the movements of proteins implicated in a variety of diseases. It brings together citizen scientists who volunteer to run simulations of protein dynamics on their personal computers. Insights from this data are helping scientists to better understand biology, and providing new opportunities for developing therapeutics.
