More About What is Covered for Covid

by Steve Dasseos on January 16, 2021

Hi Steve, Would we get the cost of the house rental back if:

  • Someone gets quarantined for Covid
  • Someone gets Covid before or during the trip
  • We have a death in the family

These questions are from a family that is renting a house in Florida for the 2021 Spring Break. Here are the answers:

Someone gets quarantined for Covid
It has to be a medical quarantine. In this Blog post: https://tripinsurancestore.com/blog/overlooked-travel-insurance-exclusions/, I said:

Q. Does a pre-departure government mandated quarantine meet the definition of a quarantine for a covered reason when the insured traveler(s) are not sick themselves?

A. The Stay at Home or Shelter in Place orders are not a quarantine. Of the government orders I’ve read, they all allow you to leave your home for groceries. A quarantine wouldn’t allow you to leave a particular room. The quarantine covered reason covers when an insured is ill and is quarantined. The insured must be quarantined due to a Sickness.

Someone gets Covid
Before the trip: If one of the travelers has a positive test for Covid, whether or not they have symptoms, do not cancel your trip based on that test. They will have to see a doctor in person. If the doctor tells them they have to cancel their trip, you are all covered for the Trip Cancellation as long as its substantiated with medical records. I think it’s nearly a 100% likelihood the doctor tells you to cancel based on a positive test. All of our Trip cancellation plans cover Covid the same as any other illness.

Prior to the Coronavirus overwhelming medical facilities you had to see the doctor in person. The companies have become more flexible, so if your only choice is a virtual consultation, this is acceptable.

During the trip: If one of the travelers has a positive test for Covid, whether or not they have symptoms, they also need to see a doctor in person (this is true for any illness or injury). Medical treatment for Covid is covered the same as any other illness.

If a non-traveling family member gets Covid before or during your trip, they have to be ill enough that you would cancel or cut your trip short. Covid is treated the same as any other illness.

We have a death in the family
An unexpected death (i.e. – not due to a pre-existing medical condition) of a traveler or a non-traveling family member before or during your trip is covered. It’s a Trip cancellation if it happens before the trip and a Trip Interruption if it happens on the trip and you come home early. If it’s due to a pre-existing medical condition, you want to be sure your policy includes the waiver of the pre-existing medical condition.

You are covered whether or not the family member is seriously ill or injured as well as if they passed away.

If any of the coverages relating to Covid changes, I’ll write another Blog post.
