Don’t Want To Get A Passport

by Steve Dasseos on October 7, 2009

Hello, Steve. I have several friends who love to cruise. They have never had, nor do they plan to get, passports. (I know…weird, but it’s their belief system.) At any rate, Homeland security has o.k.’d (at least for now) birth certificates for identification purposes. Our friends are concerned that at some point only passports will be accepted forms of i.d. and that if they book a cruise, and the rules change, they will be out of luck. Would any travel insurance cover them in the event the above scenario would occur? Thanks for any help you could provide. Diane

Hi Diane,

Thanks for writing. Your friends don’t have much of a choice when it comes to getting cruise travel insurance. In fact, their only choice is to get a “Cancel For Any Reason / Change Your Mind” plan, though it’s not the best fit. Here’s why:

Why Buy It:

  • You will get up to 80% of your money back if you cancel for a reason not normally covered
  • “Cancel For Any Reason / Change Your Mind” is an optional upgrade to a regular trip cancellation travel insurance plan so you have all the other benefits available to you if you take your trip

Quibbles:

  • “Cancel For Any Reason / Change Your Mind” plan just covers cancelling a trip. It’s not “Interrupt For Any Reason”
  • You must cancel your trip at least 2 days before your departure date if you’re cancelling for a reason not normally covered
  • The additional cost is about 50% more than the base premium

In other words, your friends have to decide to cancel their trip before they are denied boarding or have any travel delays due to their lack of passports. On the other hand, they’ll be covered if they get hit by a Cement Truck on their trip.
