Does Rebooking My Cruise Reset My Initial Deposit Date?

by Steve Dasseos on May 4, 2009

Dear Steve, we are in the process of switching our reservation from Holland America to AAA as it is $120 cheaper!! I will confirm this on Friday with a deposit and then call you. So I am assuming I have 10 days or so to get the travel insurance and that would cover preexisting conditions. Am I right? Sharon

Hi Sharon,

Switching the cruise to a different travel agent doesn’t necessarily re-set the initial trip deposit date. If any of the money you paid previously is either transferred or applied to your new cruise’s booking, the original deposit date will be the same.

The only way it’s treated as a new trip with a new deposit date is if you can show documentation that the following is true:

  • You completely cancelled the first cruise along with all other travel arrangements and
  • You received 100% of your money back from all your travel arrangements as either a credit card credit or in the form of a check made payable to you and
  • Your new trip has different travel dates than the trip you cancelled

Then, sometime after that date you book a new cruise or other trip. If you don’t book a new cruise or other trip, the travel insurance company will treat it as an adjustment of the original booking and you will not have a new initial trip deposit date.

I hope this made sense. If you have any questions about travel insurance, email Steve (me), The Travel Insurance Guru, here.
