Don’t Save Money on Travel Insurance This Way

by Steve Dasseos on October 27, 2010

There are three of us travelling (husband, wife and adult child), but we want to save money on the insurance. Can I buy insurance for just one of us and since we are a family, will we all be covered? Some friends did this and they saved over $200 on their travel insurance. Thanks, Randy

I actually get this question now and then. Usually the caller tells me that they read about it somewhere or that someone they knew did this and it saved them money.

It’s true that not buying travel insurance will save you money on that purchase. In fact, not buying anything will immediately save you money.

If you take this way of thinking a few more steps, you might be able to convince yourself that instead of spending $5,000 on your next vacation instead of the $6,000 you normally spend means you just saved $1,000!

Like this? If so, you might have a future in government work. Start at your local level and after a few years of being known as a ruthless budget-cutter, you could easily end up in a cushy State or Federal job.

I’m getting off-track. Here’s the answer to Randy’s question:

If you buy insurance on just one of you, the other 2 people will have no coverage of any kind. In other words, if you get hit by a cement truck and have to cancel your trip, you’ll be just fine.

Unfortunately the other two people won’t get any refund of their prepaid and non-refundable trip costs.

I hope this makes sense. If you want the right travel insurance advice, call us at 1-888-407-3854 and we'll help you figure it all out.
