Can People Be Added to a Travel Insurance Policy?

by Steve Dasseos on January 5, 2010

I purchased trip insurance from you. We have two more people who will now join us on the trip. One of them is 17 and is a friend of the family (not related). It looks like I must purchase separate policies for the 17 year old and the second person who will be joining us. Is this correct? Thank you!! Kathleen

Yes, that’s correct. Your particular plan insures family members ages 17 and under for free as long as they are related to the first person listed on the policy. As you correctly stated, the not related 17 year old must be on their own policy.

In addition, because you can’t add anyone to a previously-issued policy, the other family member traveling with you will have to be on their own policy.

Even though you didn’t ask this, the fact that some of you will be on different policies does not negate any of the trip cancellation nor trip interruption benefits. That’s because you all are still travelling companions due to the fact that you are going on the same trip to the same destination with the same travel dates.

I hope this makes sense. If you want the right travel insurance advice, call us at 1-888-407-3854 and we'll help you figure it all out.
