Can a Non-traveler Buy Travel Insurance for a Traveler?

by Steve Dasseos on January 8, 2010

My parents get frequent flyer points on their credit card. Can I use their credit card to pay for our travel insurance even though they aren’t going on the trip? Catherine

Hi Catherine,

This is a common question, and once you see the answer, you’ll think, “Oh yes, that makes sense”. Though it’s worth asking since it’s better to buy travel insurance correctly up front than it is to make a mistake and fix it later.

The short answer is “Yes”.

The reason is because insurance companies (and most businesses, too, if they’re smart) will take money from anybody. Just like it doesn’t matter who pays for your meal at a restaurant or to put gas in your car, it doesn’t matter who pays for your travel insurance.

Here’s a word of advice when you are using someone else’s credit card to buy insurance: make sure they know the charge is coming. Even though they give you permission to use their credit card, out of courtesy tell them the amount that will be charged to their card.

I hope this makes sense. If you want the right travel insurance advice, call us at 1-888-407-3854 and we'll help you figure it all out.
