Hello, I’m looking at purchasing a Trip Insurance policy from you. When I read the policy wording, under definitions, I see: “Physician means a licensed practitioner of medical, surgical, or dental services acting within the scope of his\/her license in the jurisdiction where the services are rendered. The treating Physician cannot be You, a Traveling Companion, a Family Member, or a Business Partner.”<\/p>\n

Does that mean a licensed nurse can be a \u201cPhysician\u201d to authorize a Trip Cancellation, a Trip Interruption or make any other medical recommendations for anything covered by a policy?<\/p>\n

No, neither a licensed nurse, nor a nurse practitioner, meet a Trip Insurance policy’s definition of a \u201cPhysician\u201d.<\/p>\n

In case you’re wondering, the medical coverage doesn’t exclude you from receiving treatment from a icensed nurse because medical services (including charges for anesthetics, x-ray examinations or treatments, and laboratory tests) and supplies, prescription drugs, and therapeutic services ordered or prescribed by a Physician as Medically Necessary for treatment are covered.<\/p>\n

If a traveler is currently ill or injured, they must be consulting with a licensed Physician who tells them they cannot travel because their current illness or injury is so disabling that they cannot travel. Your illness or injury will have to be substantiated with medical records. Prior to the Coronavirus overwhelming medical facilities you had to see the Physician in person. The insurance companies have become more flexible which means you could do a consultation via Skype or a televisit format. You do need some kind of face-to-face consultation with a licensed Physician.<\/p>\n
