I am looking for insurance to cover a cruise in May. If my husband’s union goes on strike, he may have to work on the picket line. Can we get coverage for this under the “cancel for work reason” benefit if he has to work on the picket line? Everybody I’ve called say it’s covered, but I can’t get any of them to put it in writing for me. Would you be able to confirm that it’s covered? Thanks, Cindy

Hi Cindy,

Yes, I’m happy to put the answer in writing. I can’t say why no one’s been willing to give you the verbal answer they gave you in writing, but, I suspect one reason is that they weren’t certain of the answer. You won’t like my answer, but I’d rather tell you the truth.

The answer is “No, you will not be covered under any “cancel for work reason” benefits if he has to work on the picket line.

Cancel For Work Reason means that the traveler must provide proof of their requirement to work, such as a notarized statement signed by an officer of his/her employer on company letterhead.

However, in your husband’s case, his employer isn’t requiring him to work. Instead, his union would be requiring him to work (as in on the picket lines), but not his company. Therefore, the travel insurance company would deny your claim.

Your other option is to get a Cancel For Any Reason policy. If you change your mind at least You can get up to 80% of the money you lose if you cancel your trip at least 48 hours or 2 days before you leave on your trip. This is more expensive, but it might be worth getting.

Take a look at this to understand the 48 hours or 2 days: When 48 Hours Does Not Equal 2 Calendar Days.

I’m sorry I don’t have the answer you wanted, but it is the truth. If the Cancel For Work Reason is the only reason you’d buy trip cancellation travel insurance, don’t waste your money.

Subscribe We live in Illinois.
