Do Travel Insurance Claims Require Documentation?

by Steve Dasseos on June 3, 2010

My Mother is ill and is at home surrounded by her family and friends. She has a health care directive that forbids any medical professional from giving her any medical treatment no matter what happens to her.

I just paid the deposit on a trip that starts 6 weeks from now. I will cancel my trip if she takes a turn for the worse.

Which plan should I get that will not require any documentation from a medical professional to prove something happened to her that causes me to either cancel or interrupt my trip? Since there won’t be any medical professionals involved, the insurance company will have to take my word as to what happened. Thanks, Joan

I am sorry to hear about your Mother, Joan.

Unfortunately, there aren’t any insurance companies that will take your word as to what happened if you have to file a claim. They all require an Attending Physicians Statement to be included on the claim form.

The fact that your Mother’s health care directive forbids any medical professional from treating her will prevent your claim from being paid. Therefore it stands to reason that there will not be any Attending Physicians Statement on the claim form.

In addition, a “Cancel For Any Reason” wouldn’t be any benefit while on your trip because it requires the cancellation be done at least 2 days before your departure date and it’s not trip interruption for any reason.

Therefore, if your only reason for getting trip insurance is due to your Mother’s medical condition, I cannot recommend you buy trip insurance.

There are other good reasons to get trip insurance, like emergency medical coverage, travel delays, luggage, but I don’t know if you have any interest in these. Call me at 1-888-407-3854 and we can discuss this further.
