Travel Insurance Can’t Help Debbie

by Steve Dasseos on March 11, 2011

Steve,

I knew I was past the deadline — wish I would have known about your wonderful website TripInsuranceStore.com when I booked. I looked at all of the reasons and I might need the plan that lets you cancel for any reason, but I don’t know if I can get it.

Here’s my circumstance: I booked my cruise in March 2010. I was permanently laid off from my position of almost 28 years in May 2010. Luckily, I got hired in a temporary position and before that I was accepted into a paid program to learn a new skill that will start soon. It’s for 6 months and should end a little before my cruise. I need unemployment and more to live. Because I have to leave my temp position (no guarantee of perm. hire) and that is viewed as quitting by Unemployment I might have to dip into my retirement account in order to live.

My trip will be paid for next month but a lot can happen before my cruise departs. I’d just feel better having a safety net that I could get all of that money back if I needed it. I still have to get air fare (I’m hoping I have enough frequent flier miles for that) and pay for a hotel a day or two before we depart and then any extra side trips I might want to take. I know that some staff members for the program are supposed to be looking for jobs for us participants. What if at the completion of my training and testing I’m offered a job so can go? What if I need the money I’ve spent on the cruise to live … and on and on.

I’ve called around to the other online travel insurance sites. They told me I could easily get a trip cancellation plan for my trip. I have no doubts I can buy a trip cancellation plan, but I am worried it might not pay the claim.

What is your recommendation? Debbie

Hi Debbie,

Thank you for providing all this detail. That’s great you are accepted in the paid training program.

Yes, you do have a complicated situation.

Unfortunately, I cannot think of any way a trip cancellation travel insurance plan would cover you for the possibility of needing the money to live on or getting a job. Therefore, if that’s your only reason to get travel insurance, I suggest you don’t waste the money on it.

I hope this makes sense. If you want the right travel insurance advice, call us at 1-888-407-3854 and we'll help you figure it all out.
